Coach Luke will not be there to help figure out if you're a pronator, supinator, etc. but you can always ask a staff member to look at your athlete on the treadmill to see what shoe would work best for them, especially if they have been injury prone in the past. The big advantage of SR is that they are all experienced runners who can figure out what type of training shoe will help minimize your chance of injury. In this time of uncertainty, Skinny Raven is creating a weekly XC Course of the Week on Strava for high school runners like you, so that you can challenge yourself despite the lack of formal meets. Here are the basics to get you started: Runners will need to be registered on Strava: https://www.strava.com/register/free?cta=sign-up&element=button&source=website_show Runners do not need to do paid Strava to participate, but will not be able to access complete leader boards or friends, etc w/o Premium subscription ($5 per month). Here’s a Runners World link with details how to register on Strava. All info, including privacy, is listed with link: https://www.runnersworld.com/beginner/g25619156/what-is-strava/ Runners need to have a GPS devise in order to record their efforts. Devices like Garmin/Apple watch are easiest, but phones w/ GPS or GPS bike computers work as well. We will start with 4 weeks and 4 different courses rotating around Anchorage. We can extend series for as long as needed. Here is the Course of the Week schedule: Kincaid 8/10; Hillside 8/17; Chugiak 8/24; Bartlett 8/31. Distances will vary with goal to increase as series progresses. Point Standings: Bonus points for Top 10 - 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. All participants get 5 points. So top 10 will get 5 pts + whatever bonus points from place i.e. 1st place gets 15 pts, 10th place gets 6 pts. We are currently working with vendors to get prizes for drawings and overall places. Runners have entire week to do the course. They can do multiple times as only their best time will show on the leader board. Skinny Raven will donate 10 weekly $10 gift certificates randomly selected to 5 Girls/Boys to complete course each week. Runners need to set their Profile names to actual Name (First/Last), School & year of graduation. So Alice Jones – Service/21 or Steven Hill – West/23. Athletes without school/graduation year will not be scored or receive any prize. Junior High runners can participate, but will not be eligible for scoring or prizes this year. The results were announced today at practice. We will not have an outdoor spaghetti feed this week. And we will push the Scavenger hunt into next week to give the captains more time to prepare for it. The ASD-wide Wednesday Kincaid team trial was postponed. Instead, Friday practices, at 2:30pm and at 5pm, will be held at Bartlett high school. All athletes have a choice of whether they attend the 2:30 or the 5pm practice. See map below. Athletes need go to their respective 2:30 or 5pm practice on all other days until we have to change things up again. With this season, I'm sure that won't be long. Remember, no mask, no practice. All athletes need to be wearing their mask on the practice field unless they are doing striders. Athletes did a much better job of complying with the groups of 4 to 10 rule yesterday. However, several athletes needed to be reminded of the 10 ft rule and masks on when on the field, even if they were dismissed from practice and waiting for a ride. Remember, - everyone is to stay 10 feet away from everyone else and be wearing a mask when on the practice field. Failure to comply will result in burpees. Continued failure to comply will result in being asked to leave the team. - runners are to go out in groups of at least 4 and no more than 10 athletes when doing recovery and long runs. Failure to comply will result in being restricted to field runs. Continued failure to comply will result in being asked to leave the team. I know this may sound harsh. But we need ZERO cases of covid transmission this season. Failure to achieve this goal could have dire consequences. We need to split the team up into two practices starting tomorrow (Tuesday, August 25th) to comply with keeping group size under 50 athletes. Which practice are you in? 2:30pm - 5:00pm Ghost Peppers, Banana Peppers 4:30pm-7:00pm Carolina Reaper Peppers and Chipolte Peppers Check the attachment if you don't which hot pepper you are for the 2020 season. Thank you to everyone who helped make the Cougars 1st week of XC training and racing safe and productive. We will continue to do daily temperature and warning sign Covid screens by the little gym, with athletes going to our white dot grid directly after. I would like to give a personal shout out to Sorcha for not taking these questions for granted and telling us she had a recent cough and sore throat. As I said at the team meeting last Monday, PE credit will not be dependent on your practice attendance record this season. And answering our covid questions honestly and openly will be an important step in keeping everyone safe and healthy this season. Way to go Sorcha! Attached are 2 excel files. Congratulations to Perpetua Hippler for a top 10 posting and figuring out how to upload her gps file onto strava to make it official. Congrats to Nowelle, Zoe and Mina for leading the way for the Lady Cougars. Congratulations to Tate, Elias, Aaron Power, and Joel for posting top 10 times. Congrats to Zander for winning the hilly 2.04mi course with a 10:44 effort despite encountering some gps issues. The Speed groups file is our first draft of the Cougar 2020 speed groups we will break into this week when we do interval and hill repeat workouts. I'm happy to announce that Max Romey, a 2012 Cougar graduate, will be Service's new assistant coach starting on Monday. We now have a full coaching staff to take on the 2020 season challenges! Cougars, we will be running the "Skinny Raven XC 2020" as the 1st race of the season. We are competing on this course as a team on Friday. Please have athletes sign up on Strava prior to the Friday team time trial.
